Grace is one of the most determined persons with down syndrome who has graced the stage. Coming from a privileged background and having studied in an American high school in New York did not make her rest on her laurels. Instead she has gone on to supercede her own achievements and reach for the “impossible dream ”.
Already a seasoned orator reciting her own poems and verses when she became involved in “Memories of Senses” - 1996 Arts Festival Fringe programme - she immersed herself completely in the rehearsal process. She enjoyed the workshops where she experienced the interaction of time and space with movement, voice and touch. Though an only child, her warmth and openness won her many friends.
More significantly, in true Grace Chan spirit, she overcame her fear of going up stairs while preparing for this performance. From someone whose knees would knock and jaws would chatter while negotiating a stairs, she left the performance with confident steps and a renewed sense of confidence that she could do anything if she wanted to. That was quintessential Grace Chan on stage.
