Year of Birth: 1983 Disability: Down Syndrome Medium: Marker, Paints Fern enjoys art, and it is through her drawings that she is free to express herself. Fern's unique art pieces exude an innate sense of joy, something which she will readily share with those who appreciate her work.
Fern's art stands out for its intricate details and free form. At a tender age, she found interest in drawing geometric shapes. From doodling circles and triangles, she blossomed into a true artist with her own abstract interpretation of nature. Fern likes to do drawings of flowers, and is most happy using her coloured markers to fill her canvas with her favourite subject. Her zest for life is apparent, as she often chooses to use warm colours of pink, red and orange to colour in and add detail.
Fern is clearly dedicated to her art, as she spends a fair amount of time on her drawings. Once inspired, she will stay in her room, turn on the radio and work on her art pieces. A piece of art can take up as much as five months of her time. Fern has entered and won accolades in several competitions, including the distinguished UOB Painting of the Year Competition in the Open Section.
In this Open Section of the UOB Painting of the Year Competition, competing against more illustrious and able artists and without the distinguished panel of judges knowing that she has a disability, she was awarded :
- Highly Commended in the open category in 2004 and 2005.
- Certificate of Distinction in the open category in 2006
Fern wants to continue drawing and will sell her art to those who enjoy her work. As she cheerfully puts it, "I just feel so happy when others like my art".
