Fook Hong attended the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art's certificate course in Western Art. Fook Hong's talent in art was discovered by an art teacher while he was still a student at APSN Delta Senior High. He aspires to be a graphic designer and has, through VSA, had the opportunity to take an introductory course in basic design.
Although he has some difficulty understanding the technical aspects of graphic design, he has shown great promise in design creativity. At home, his older brothers tutor him in the use of computers and design software.
Fook Hong dreams of having a career in the arts one day.
Characterised by the colors black and white, the imaginative talented artist prefers to play around with lines and shapes rather than other colours. He lets his vivid imagination run wild in every piece of art, plotting intersecting lines and grids with a black pen. These lines form pictures of meaning and complexity expressed from the abstract details of every drawing. Ask him what they mean and he patiently explains the inspiration behind each intersection and shade of black as manifestations of his feelings.
His favourite paintings are “The Scream” by Edvard Munch and “Sunflowers” by Vincent Van Gogh because they express what he feels at times – loneliness, silence and peace.
Fook Hong likes to draw abstract patterns of solar systems, nature and reflect it in his drawings of landscapes, houses and boats. At times he uses water colours to paint the landscape drawings.
Having attended VSA art classes for the past few years, he is thankful for the opportunities given to him to pursue his interest in art.
Constant support and encouragement from his mother cheers Fook Hoong up in times of unhappiness. A typical day for him starts at 5 am in the morning as he helps his hawker mother prepare for the day’s work at the carrot cake stall opposite their flat.
Currently working on a drawing of screws, he explains that the repeated patterns and motives are to lock his feelings away from the world.
It is only through art that Fook Hoong can express himself this way.
Aspiring to be a recognized artist, he understands that the road ahead is full of challenges, but remains optimistic that he can realize his dream someday.
