ImageImageJill of all trades, sixteen year old Su An has experienced more than what most of us have.  She plays the organ, dances ballet, swims, paints, horse-rides and roller-skates.  Su An has Down’s Syndrome but that has not stopped her from reaching for the stars.
At the age of 5, she started organ lessons at Yamaha after her parents had seen a boy with cerebral palsy play the organ.  Initially, they were disillusioned because they felt that it was too traumatic an experience for Su an as she was not like the other children.  She was introverted and shy whilst the other kids seemed very good and active.  However Su An’s perseverance paid off and she progressed in her organ lessons, carrying on even when other children dropped out.
Su An gave her first public performance in 1996 at the Asia Pacific Down Syndrome Conference and she has not stopped playing on since.  A memorable solo performance was given by Su An in DSA and VSA’s 1999 playlet “From the Mouths of Babes”.  The concentration etched on her face as she produced melodious tunes on the organ with her deft fingers.
On why she does what she does, Su An simply says “Because I like music”.  Su an has battled the trials of Down’s Syndrome like poor muscle development and takes part in many outdoor activities like in-line skating.  Even though falling down is part and parcel of the learning process, she is surrounded by patient people like her parents who pick her up when she falls.  Su An is indeed touched by angels.
