“I find volunteering at VSA extremely satisfying. It gives me a sense of fulfillment, achievement, and pride when I see the students succeed. I have learnt so much from spending time with the students there and I feel privileged to have this opportunity.”

STORY OF MY LIFE @ VSA AS A VOLUNTEER

My name is Bhavisha Methani and I am a Year One student doing a Diploma in Arts and Theatre Management. I have been volunteering at Very Special Arts (VSA) since 3 January 2015 under the Speech and Drama Department.

VSA is a charity launched in September 1993 that aims to provide people with disabilities access to the arts for rehabilitation and social integration.

The vision of VSA is “A world where people with disabilities are empowered through the arts, contribute to and integrate with the community”. The mission of VSA is “To create and provide access and opportunities for people with disabilities through the arts”.

VSA conducts programs for children and youth, between the ages of 6 to 18, with disabilities as well as for adults with disabilities.

Being a non-profit organisation, VSA relies heavily on volunteers to conduct the various programs.

Due to my tight school schedule, I am able to volunteer only on Saturdays. During this one year, I have facilitated programs for various age groups, with participants ranging from 3 years of age to 21.

We try to provide a safe space for the students to express themselves. We hope to pass on skills such as interacting with others and following instructions as well as boosting their self-esteem through the activities conducted. For example, we help them prepare for performances to showcase to their parents and collaborate with schools such as Changkat Changi Secondary School. We try to portray real life scenarios through activities such as tableaux.

I find volunteering at VSA extremely satisfying. It gives me a sense of fulfillment, achievement, and pride when I see the students succeed. I have learnt so much from spending time with the students there and I feel privileged to have this opportunity.

I have every intention to continue being a volunteer at VSA. In fact, I strongly recommend everyone to come forward to support the VSA in any capacity they can.

Opportunities

VSA Singapore welcomes any volunteers who want to discover art through the eyes of extraordinary people. Thanks to our volunteers’ skills, time and commitment, VSA Singapore had been able to organise even more activities for our students and ensure that its programs keep running. Our volunteers can have the opportunity to share their expertise, meet new people and embellishing the lives of others while enriching their own.
You may volunteer on either an ad-hoc or regular basis.

Here are the different opportunities that you may consider:

ART CLASSES
This is your chance to meet VSA students and help them follow their performing or visual art lessons. Your role is to assist the teacher in making sure the students understand the instructions and help them focus on their tasks.
As familiarity and continuity in supervision make for a more conducive and beneficial learning environment for our students, we welcome Art Angels who can commit at least 2-3 school terms (our programs follow the school calendar as laid out by MOE). These classes are conducted at VSA Bedok Centre and VSA Art Space @ Changi.

HOLIDAYS WORKSHOPS
During the March, June, September and November holidays, VSA Singapore runs different workshops varying from half a day to 4 days to broaden the experiences of its beneficiaries. Volunteers can help the students discover a new skill or learn a new craft, and chaperone them during their breaks.
The workshops are typically conducted at VSA Bedok and VSA Art Space @ Changi.

ADMINISTRATIVE WORK
Volunteers provide much needed office support, preparing projects, updating databases or our different media tools, researching new activities and teachers, and ad-hoc tasks.
The locations are, VSA Bedok Centre or VSA Art Space @ Changi, anytime from Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm.

EXHIBITION SUPPORT
This is your chance to help our artists with disabilities by promoting and selling their craft and artworks. Exhibition locations and time periods vary.

PROJECTS
VSA also provides volunteers who would like to initiate projects (such as fund-raising events, exhibitions, holiday workshops) and form Organising and Executive Committees.
